Barbara Jean Smith Obituary

Barbara Jean Smith of Warwick, NY entered into rest on July 8, 2025. She was 83.

The daughter of the late Frank and Audria Patterson Rhodes, she was born on January 5, 1942 in Warwick, NY. Growing up Barbara and her sister Mary spent much time on the family’s farm.

Barbara graduated from Warwick Valley High School in 1960, and then attended Rider College where she graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. After college she married Raymond F Smith, recently celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Barbara loving referred to her children as “the girls” and “the boys” as there was a ten-year age gap between then.  Barbara was a stay-at-home mom while the girls grew up; she enjoyed vacating with the family in the Adirondacks, was great at canning, crocheting, and was a Brownie troop leader. Her & Raymonds enjoyment of the Adirondacks led them to spend every summer at McIntyre’s Campsite in AuSable Forks where they enjoyed fishing and lake life, for the past 47 years. As the boys grew up and entered school, she returned to work where she worked in food service at Kings Elementary School until she retired in 2009.

Barbara was a member of the Amity Presbyterian Church in Amity until its closure in 2010; she was baptized, married, an Elder of the church, and held the role of Clerk of Session for many years. The Church’s turkey dinners were legendary and Barbara could be found in the kitchen baking turkeys and apple crisps to help support the event.

She is survived by her husband Raymond Smith; four children, Christine Heller (Andrew Sr); Amy Weslowski (Bruce); Frank Smith and Paul Smith (Jenn); grandchildren Michael Heller, David Heller, Andrew Heller Jr, Samantha Cook, Kai Weslowski, Sean Weslowski and Lexi Smith; sister Mary Dimke; along with several nieces, nephews and two great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her Mother Audria Shader, Father Frank Rhodes, stepfather Elmer Shader, brother John (Jack) Rhodes, and sister Erma Rhodes.

At Barbara’s wish, a private cremation will be held.

The family would like to thank the staff at Valley View Nursing Home, for the care and compassion they gave mom in her final days.

Memorial contributions may be made to Warwick Community Ambulance Service, Inc, PO Box 315, Warwick NY 10990.
