Obituary of Margaret Lillian Sturr

Margaret “Lillian” Sturr of Florida NY entered into rest on May 11, 2011 at home with her family by her side. She was 94 years old. Lillian was the daughter of Charles J. and Lillian Ann Gallagher born April 26, 1917 in Springfield, MA. Lillian was predeceased by her husband of 69 years James W. Sturr Sr. She is survived by her son famed band leader James W. Sturr Jr. and his girlfriend Barbara James; two grandchildren Kenneth James and wife Cathy, and Jennifer James; brother Thomas Gallagher of Springfield, MA; sister-in-law Dorothy Reed and numerous nieces and nephews. Lillian served on the board of St. Anthony’s Hospital as well as being president of the board. She was member of St. Edwards Church where she taught CCD classes or many years. She was a member of the Seward PTA where she served as president. For many years she was the treasurer of the Florida American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Sturr helped in organizing the Florida Public Library and served on the Library Board as well as being president for over 25 years. Lillian received the Orange County Executive Recognition Award in recognition of her dedicated service to the Florida Library. She was a member of the Orange, Rockland and Sullivan County Heart Fund Organization Volunteering for over 30 Years. In 2008 she received the life Achievement Award from her Hometown of Florida, NY. Special thanks to her caregiver Maria Furdova. Visitation will be held on Monday May 16, 2011 from 5-8 pm at T.S. Purta Funeral Home 22 Glenmere Ave. Florida, NY Funeral mass will be held 10 am on Tuesday May 17, 2011 at St. Josephs RC Church 20 Glenmere Ave. Florida, NY.
